Isn’t it funny how we always want what we don’t have? I grew up in the northeast, and even though I never miss shoveling my driveway or scraping the ice off my windshield, I miss all of the winter activities now that I live in Virginia. There’s a certain flair to snow-filled activities that you can’t get any other time of year.
That’s why a Maine vacation is the perfect solution: I get all of the fun and none of the responsibility.
Now, if all I wanted was was winter sports, then sure: any old place will do. But for me, the setting is almost as important as the activity itself. I want snow-covered forests and pristine trails, fresh air and that sparkle of the sun on perfectly white snow. And frankly, I want all of it without enormous crowds. Maine has that magical combination of adrenaline from winter sports with the zen of a winter wonderland.
You’ll find just about every outdoor activity possible in Maine, from downhill skiing and snowboarding to snowshoeing, ice fishing and my personal favorite: cross-country skiing.
Plus, Maine is the perfect spot to try a new winter activity like snowmobiling or fat tire biking. You’ll find tons of outfitters and registered guides ready to help you get started, so if you’re new to an activity you’ll have an expert to show you the ropes.
If intense snow sports aren’t your thing, Maine has an option for you, too. Head to the coast, where the Atlantic ocean moderates temperatures and you can still include traditional favorites like hiking. You’ll pass locals on the trails — they know that winter is a great time to be outside — but far fewer tourists so it’ll feel like you’ve got the whole park to yourself. As long as you pack accordingly, you’ll find winter adventures just as fun (if not more!) than the summer versions.
Maine’s ski resorts make it easy to plan all your outdoor adventures and day trip beyond the slopes. The best part about all this is you can work up a sweat during your outdoor fun and then get cozy afterwards. Cozy up to a crackling fireplace and sip on your hot cocoa…you’ve earned it!
With 200 inches of snow over the course of winter, Maine basically guarantees a winter wonderland. Visiting Maine in the winter is incredible, so what are you waiting for?
