Caribbean islands have a reputation for being places where you simply swim and bake in the sun all day, but Jamaica is the perfect tropical getaway for adventurous travelers. Regardless of where you base yourself, you’ll find sightDOING excursions to turn your trip from a relaxing getaway to an invigorating experience.
Daredevils Only: Jump Off a Jamaican Cliff

Negril has seven miles of cliffs along the shore, making it a rugged coastline that’s perfect for pictures. When photography is too passive for your vacation plans, head to Rick’s Cafe for the thrill of a lifetime. The coves in this part of the area have platform jumps built into it at various heights up to 35 feet. Jump if you dare, or watch others take the plunge. It’s particularly beautiful if you stay for sunset before retreating to Negril hotels.
Mix Air and Water in Montego Bay
When you can’t decide if you want to play in the ocean or stay above water, the best of both worlds is kiteboarding. Montego Bay is home to Jamaica’s only kiteboarding center which is internationally certified for your safety. You can take lessons, of if you’re already a pro, head out with rental equipment to get some air time! Most Montego Bay hotels can help set you up with classes or arrange other water sports if the family isn’t up for something new.
Take a Ride in Lucea
If you want to see both Negril and Montego Bay, book one of the hotels in Lucea so you can easily head to either city. For something right in town, though, sign up for a horseback ride. You’ll head out on the beach for lovely views and then take a swim with your animal. The feel of the water on your legs as you swim is refreshing and some horses love to play, too.
Explore the Scenery in Runaway Bay
On the north central coast of Jamaica is some of the country’s most beautiful scenery. Sure, you can explore it by taking a scenic drive, but take things up a notch by heading off-road. You’ll see jungle rainforest, countryside villages, and miles of sandy coastline. If you get muddy from the drive, dip in the ocean to clean off. Since hotels in Runaway Bay are often waterfront, it’s the fastest way to bathe before tracking dirt into the room.
Climb a Waterfall in Ocho Rios

Dunn’s River Falls are Jamaica’s best known tourist attraction and they’re an incredibly fun day trip from Ocho Rios. Natural terraces in the waterfalls make it possible to climb up as if they’re giant natural stairs. Guides will help you up the slippery path and take your picture as you get splashed along the way. The lush greenery surrounding the falls adds to the tropical experience and makes it feel like a whole different world compared to the seaside Ocho Rios hotels where most travelers stay.
Even though there’s something great to do everywhere in Jamaica, the relatively compact country means you can see and do it all, regardless of where you stay.
